Chenggong Town, once known as the "Malau Community," was renamed "New Harbor" by the Japanese in 1921 and later changed to "Chenggong" after the war. Archaeological evidence of the 3,500-year-old Qilin culture is most abundant here, demonstrating the region's early origins. The Chenggong New Harbor Fishery is the largest harbor on the East Coast, facing the Pacific Ocean along the warm currents of the Kuroshio. With rich marine resources, such as yellowfin tuna, marlin, and skipjack tuna, the area has developed a unique marlin harpooning tradition and a thriving fishing culture. When the northeasterly monsoon blows in October each year, it marks the prime season for marlin. Fishermen's expert harpooning techniques preserve the tender and elastic texture of marlin meat, delighting gourmands who travel from afar to savor the delicious marlin dishes here. Additionally, Chenggong lies within the Kuroshio Current, making it an excellent destination for whale-watching. Embark on a whale-watching tour to admire the scenic islands of the East Coast while potentially observing playful dolphin groups leaping in the ocean—the breathtaking moments are always unforgettable. Beyond whale-watching and savoring marlin in winter, the town offers various local specialties and souvenirs: juicy yellowfin tuna steaks, smooth Chenggong pudding, handmade pastries made with local ingredients—all are must-try culinary delights when visiting Chenggong!
