The Shaoshuai Chan Garden is located in the shade of the foothills of Beitou, built during the middle period of Japanese rule. It consists of two buildings with gray tile roofs and wooden walls. Originally named "Shincho Hotel," it was a place where the local gentry and celebrities would hold banquets and take hot spring baths.
During World War II, it was used by the Japanese army as a comfort station for the kamikaze pilots before their attacks. After the war, in the 1960s, the couple Zhang Xueliang, who had instigated the Xi'an Incident to resist Japan, was imprisoned here by the then President Chiang Kai-shek. In 1984, the garden was renovated and established as "Chan Garden," recording the various events of Beitou over the past century. Now, it has been rebuilt as a scenic restaurant named "Shaoshuai Chan Garden" with the theme of "Shaoshuai." Due to its high elevation, it offers a view of the entire Beitou hot spring area and Guanyin Mountain. In the evening, it is also possible to enjoy the beautiful sunset scenery. The garden serves the classic dishes once enjoyed by Zhang Xueliang and his wife, making it a great place that combines ecology, history, scenery, and cuisine.
