Cross-Sea Bridge

The Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge spans a total of 2,494 meters, crossing the Hōmen Strait between Baisha and Xiyu (Yongwang Island). The swift currents in the strait are a notorious hazard in Penghu waters. During the winter northeasterly monsoon, the waves grow even more violent, making navigation difficult. Consequently, construction of the bridge began in 1965, and it was completed and opened to traffic in 1970 to alleviate the transportation difficulties between Xiyu and Baisha. Later, severe corrosion and collapse of the bridge prompted the widening of the causeway in 1984, and a new dual‑lane bridge was completed in 1996. Viewed from afar, the bridge resembles a rainbow across the sea, offering not only scenic value but also smooth traffic flow between Xiyu and Baisha. Even today, the northern waters at the Xiyu end still contain early cement pylons and frameworks; on the Xiyu side, weathered bridge piers remain, illustrating the early history of high‑voltage power lines spanning the sea for Xiyu’s electricity and the old bridge’s decline.
