Upon entering Chi-Shang Mu-Yeh Resort, one is greeted by a vast expanse of green meadows stretching to the horizon. Distant emerald hills are cloaked in drifting clouds, while nearby lie lush pastures carpeting the land like an emerald rug. Initially, this area was used by the Taitung Sugar Factory as a sugarcane plantation. After sugar production ceased in 1986 (Minguo 75), it was transformed into a ranch for raising beef cattle, and in 1994 (Minguo 83), it evolved further into a resort. To establish a distinctive identity, in 2000 (Minguo 89), the resort introduced several Mongolian cultural elements, such as 17 yurts serving as accommodations, fluttering Mongolian tribal flags, whole roasted lamb and pork dishes with authentic Mongolian flavors, ground-scale chess like Mongolian chess, war chariots pulled by more than 20 horses, and performances showcasing Mongolian bravery, creating an immersive pastoral Mongolian ambiance. The resort has remained unique in its charm. In 2003 (Minguo 92), Chi-Shang Mu-Yeh Resort partnered with the Taipei Municipal Woodland Zoo to introduce various rare herbivores, including pygmy hippos, Przewalski’s horses, argali sheep, Chapman’s zebras, vicuñas, Père David’s deer, Bactrian camels, tule elk, and ostriches. Coupled with horses, sheep, sika deer, and grazing cattle, the property resembles a small zoo, forming another notable attraction. This 125-hectare resort is currently open free to visitors. I highly recommend renting a bicycle and taking a long shady path lined with *Buchanania lactea* trees from the entrance. Explore this pastoral landscape filled with an out-of-Asia charm, wander across the verdant meadows, and savor the tranquil rural scenery. Additionally, be sure to allocate time for cultural performances and exhibitions to fully experience Mongolian traditions, as well as indulge in authentic Taisugar products and Mongolian cuisine.
