According to legend, during the Ming Dynasty, a group of bandits landed on the southern shore of Qimei. At that time, the men on the island were out at sea fishing, leaving only the elderly, infirm, women, and children behind. Among them, seven women were busily working in the nearby mountains (some say they were washing clothes by a well) when unfortunately they encountered a sudden attack by Japanese warriors. Refusing to endure the humiliation, the seven women committed suicide by jumping into the well together. Afterward, the locals filled the well with soil, and from it, seven茂盛 and fragrant ash trees mysteriously grew. In 1949, County Magistrate Liu Yan-fu and General He Zhi-hao visited the site to pay homage. Touched by the event, General He composed the poem "Ode to the Seven Beauties," which was inscribed onto the rock face. The poem reads: "O seven beauties of jade-like purity, / Preserving your loyalty against the marauders, you died alongside. / Brave souls forever reside in the lonely blooming trees; / Everlasting spring on the well, blossoming across the branches." This tale of the seven maidens' loyalty and courage was later expanded and rebuilt into the "Maiden Chastity Garden of the Seven Beauties," attracting countless visitors annually to visit and pay respects.
