Located in the well-known Budai Township, Chiayi County, is the beautiful village of Hǎoměilí or formerly known as Wànggǎng. After several name changes through Wanzai Harbour and Hǔwěiliáo, the village finally was named Hǎoměilí. Under the collaboration of the Tourism Bureau, MOTC, Yunlin-Changhua Coast National Scenic Area Administration, the artist Tseng Chin-cheng and local residents, Hǎoměilí has become a beautiful and gorgeous village. A series of creative and interesting 3D color paintings have been created along the strolling path in Hǎoměilí, making it the only 3D color-painted fishing village in Taiwan.
In order to explore and enjoy Hǎoměilí, it is recommended to get a copy of the “Hǎoměilí 3D Ocean World Walking Map” published by the Yunlin-Changhua Coast National Scenic Area Administration, Tourism Bureau, MOTC. The map clearly marks the locations of the 3D color paintings. Each piece of work is designed with several interactive photo opportunities. For example, in the “Adventure to the Center of the Earth”, there is a steep waterfall. The secret to taking a photo is to stand on the edge of a cliff, side-facing as if you are about to fall into an endless abyss. Or, you can stand on the “Fire Phoenix” which has been reborn from fire and take a photo as if you are soaring through the sky together. As you walk along the stream and go up along the waterfall, you may also find a very exciting life buoy. Visitors can take a commemorative photo by using their imagination.
After collecting all the 3D color paintings and taking photos, do not forget to visit the Taisheng Temple and see the 300-year-old Mazu statue from the Ming dynasty. The “Big Ship Entering the Harbor” located at the entrance of the Hǎoměilí Fishing Village Park is another unmissable attraction. As you continue to follow the map, you may discover the mysterious Casuarina forest and the Hǎoměilí Nature Ecological Reserve. The coastline with a long stretch of shelterbelt and lagoon ecology are sure to fill up your camera memory.
In recent years, painted villages have mushroomed all over the country. However, Hǎoměilí still manages to stand out amongst the competition. Apart from its unique 3D paintings, Hǎoměilí also boasts diverse natural landscapes and rich historical and cultural connotations that are worth exploring and savoring. As the saying goes: “It is better to travel a thousand miles than to read a thousand volumes.” So hurry up and pack your bags for a journey combining art and natural ecology.
