Located within Cuiping Road Lane, the Hsu House is the ancestral residence of Hsu Tsuan-Hsing, the late former general director of the Farmers' Association in Ta-Shui District, Kaohsiung. The building was constructed around the Meiji 43rd year (1910) and features a single-pavilion structure with a central triple-bay layout and a two-story brick house. The second-floor balcony is adorned with green-enamelled bottle-shaped railings, while the walls of both floors and the second-floor railings are decorated with colorful tiles of various patterns. Traditional ornamental elements, including sculptures of the Eight Immortals and the Twenty-Four Exemplar Filial Acts, as well as colorful painted scroll lintels, are visible on the architecture. Particularly noteworthy are the rare brick carvings within the building, which feature figures and auspicious patterns. These brick carvings, clay sculptures, and painted scroll lintels were all crafted by Hsieh Hiao, the father of the nationally renowned shadow puppet theater master Zhang De-Cheng. Nicknamed Huan Fan, Hsieh Hiao was a versatile artist who excelled as one of the leading shadow puppeteers of his time; his calligraphy, ceramic art, wood carving, brick carvings, and clay sculptures also gained widespread acclaim throughout the original Ta-Shui Township (reorganized into Ta-Shui District after merging with the county). Many affluent households in the area featured his artistic decorations; unfortunately, most of these works have since been torn down and rebuilt.
