Beimen Station was the starting point of the Alishan Forest Railway steam train and the distribution center for the railway's freight. All of the daily supplies for the Alishan railway were transported from here, making it an important location. The Alishan Forest Railway is one of the world's most renowned high-altitude railways, boasting a unique charm. The Beimen Station of the Alishan Forest Railway was built with Taiwanese red cypress in 1912, before the full completion of the railway. The old Beimen Station was converted into an office for train car inspectors 20 years ago, after a new station was built. The station covers an area of about 28 pings, and is divided mainly into an office, a ticket house, and a waiting room. The Alishan Forest Railway is famous worldwide for its distinctive features like its "spiral track", "Z-shaped ascent", and a "62.5‰ slope". Beimen Station, the starting point of the Alishan Railway, is built completely with high-quality Taiwanese red cypress, and boasts a classical and simple design. During the Japanese period, forestry was an important source of economic income, and facilities such as the forestry office, wood storage pools, a lumber factory, a train repair factory, and a forestry club were constructed around Beimen Station. The area was a complete wood materials complex, and Beimen Station became the distribution center for Alishan's wood. Before the war, it was operated by the Taiwan Colonial Association; after the war, it was taken over by the Forestry Bureau. In October 1973, a new Beimen Station was completed, and the old Beimen Station was retired. The Alishan Forest Railway transported wood downhill, and the wood gathered near Beimen Station drove the development of lumber mills, wood stores, sawmills, and wood factories. Travelers from all over came to do business, creating opportunities for hotels, restaurants, and movie theaters, causing the local population to rapidly increase. The freight industry was bustling, and all walks of life were thriving. The Alishan Forest Railway is one of only three mountain railways in the world, and possesses a unique charm. Although the old station lost its function in March 1962, with the construction of a new station, its simple appearance and facilities are of significant cultural asset value, and the Chiayi City Government has listed it as a municipally designated historic site. Beimen Station is a Japanese-style wooden station, with a building area of 95.15 square meters, and is divided mainly into a ticket house, waiting room, and office. It is currently planned to be a railway museum, and the plaza in front of the station and the surrounding area feature public art such as a "Calling Landmark", a "Time and Space Corridor", and an "Ecological Art Wall", to strengthen the collective consciousness of railway culture.
