Copper Monkey Xinyi Store

2017-07-26
During a Saturday night of the Bali tour, two members of the Taipei Monkey Kings rugby team sat in the Sari Club discussing the possibility of opening a sports bar in Taiwan. These two friends - Peter Chworowsky, an American entrepreneur who has lived in Taiwan for a long time, and Max Murphy, an Australian who had just moved to Taiwan from Shanghai - discussed late into the night while drinking Bintang, the local beer of Bali. (At that time, the other teammates were drinking and dancing nearby.)

That day happened to be October 12, 2002. None of them could have imagined that soon after, two radical terrorists would place bombs in Paddy's Bar and Sari Club, a tragedy that took 202 lives and injured hundreds of people. Unfortunately, five members of the Taipei Monkey Kings team also died in this incident.

About two months later, Max asked, "Peter, do you remember what we were talking about that night?"

Peter replied, "Yes."

Max suggested, "Let's do it!"

So, six friends from Australia, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and the United States joined Max and Peter to start this project. They came from different professional backgrounds, contributing their respective expertise to the preparation work, and thus Copper Monkey was born on February 28, 2003!

We regard Copper Monkey as a tribute to our deceased friends, and we hope this place can provide Taipei residents and visitors with the best spot to enjoy their favorite sports programs or gather with friends.
