Neliu Mazu Holy Mother Temple

2018-06-30
The early pioneers who came to settle in Taipei saw the area of the first and second sections of Huanshan Road in Nangang District, which is located beneath the mountains, and thus called it "Shanxia," meaning "the foot of the mountain" in the local dialect. Therefore, the area of the first section of Nangang Road, No. 411 Lane, and the second section north of it, up to the first and second sections of Huanshan Road, is one corner of Nangang. The "Shanjiao Jiao Mazu" (Mazu of the foot of the mountain) is a Mazu statue worshipped in this corner.

Every Saturday of the second week of the third lunar month, there is a fixed ceremony to celebrate Mazu's birthday, including a temple tour and blessing ritual, as well as the Bihu Fireworks and Cultural Festival, which are grand celebrations, and is the largest religious event in Nangang. The "Nangang Mazu" enshrined in the Nangang Mazu Temple has always been the center of local faith. However, notably, the early Mazu statues were traditionally rotated among the local "luzhu" (representative believers) who kept them in their homes. In recent years, they have been temporarily enshrined at the Nangang Mazu Temple Preparation Office located at No. 46, Lishan Street, forming a unique phenomenon of "having a deity but no temple." However, this does not affect the devotion of the believers, and the temple tour events each year attract many worshippers traveling from all over the region.
