Tie-tie Lane

南投縣竹山鎮下橫街45號
About 80 meters inside the alley in front of the Farmers’ Association’s Tōyō Building, it connects to Zhongshan Market. After finishing business at the Association, farmer-workers head into the alley to buy the iron tools used in rural life around Zhushan. The alley once held a Wenchang Shrine, a Guanyin Pavilion, and the Chen family ancestral hall; the Wenchang Shrine (a Confucius temple) has since moved to Keming Temple, and the Guanyin image now resides in the Mazu Temple. Tieda Lane originally had three smithies—Laifa, Renchun, and Ximan; only Laifa still forges today. Its products are evolving with Zhushan’s industries: bamboo-chopstick knives, betel-nut cutters, winter-bamboo-shoot spades, banana spouts, and other regional ironware. The mold once used to make pig-killing knives is still preserved.
