The Whale Hole in Xiaomen is located in Xiaomen Village, Xiyu Township, Penghu County. Originally a basalt headland, it has been long exposed to the northeasterly monsoon and continuous wave erosion. Eventually, erosion cut through the rock, creating a sea‑erosion arch that resembles a whale stranded on a beach, giving it the name “Whale Hole.” The surrounding area, composed of basalt geology, is relatively barren, making it difficult for plants to grow. Only cacti have adapted to this terrain. Walking along the slope, you can see many cacti thriving in the harsh conditions, some even blooming beautiful flowers, leaving a lasting impression. Near the Whale Hole, you can also see the “Beehive Field.” This unique sight originated from the local people's efforts to protect plants and crops from the harsh northeasterly monsoon winds in winter. They built beehive fields using Gulu stone to shield against the strong winds, creating a distinctive landscape that supports plant and crop growth.
