Crispy Dou Dou Donut
“Dou dou” is French for “comfort toy.” Along life’s stumbling path, childlike innocence is like afternoon sunlight: wherever a door lets it in, it can light up a whole gloomy room.
Transformed from an 80-year-old house and quietly standing near Chiayi’s cultural shopping district, “Crispy Dou Dou Donut” is just such a place.
Owner Dinosaur’s parents once sold crispy donuts in Taipei’s Wanhua district; after retiring to Chiayi they passed the craft to their son. Combining his own love of vintage curios, Dinosaur found this old building on Zhongyi Street and opened shop.
Besides assorted-flavor crispy donuts, there are teas, smoothies, sparkling drinks and coffee to pair with them, all priced from NT$50 to NT$100—easy on the wallet.
“Every adult was once a child.”
Look—here’s a Doraemon shaved-ice machine, over there a Zō-san elephant, on the table a full set of comic books… In a vexing world, it’s good that this Chiayi old house guards our child-hearts, a Neverland where, donut in hand and surrounded by childhood toys, you may just return to a pure, carefree youth.
