Central Old Street is the earliest developed street in Penghu, and is therefore known as the “First Street”. In 1984 (73rd year of the Republic of China), Central Old Street was officially designated as a “Historical Site Preservation Special Area”. By 1994 (83rd year), residents of Penghu's old streets formed the “Penghu First Street Revitalization Association”, and with government subsidies, the street was restored and renovated into its current Minnan-style architectural form. The revitalization coincided with Penghu's tourism boom, allowing the old street to regain its former glory. The lanes are lined with many foreign-style buildings, including a Baroque-style traditional Chinese medicine shop and a Japanese-style old inn, both former renowned establishments. Tourists wandering through Central Old Street will pass through “Mo Riu Lane.” This lane connects to Central Street. Because early Penghu houses were built with narrow spacing, travelers had to walk sideways to avoid colliding with people. Consequently, women passing through this lane would protect their chests with both hands, giving the lane its name, “Mo Riu Lane.” After reconstruction, the lane is now very wide. Central Old Street is best known for its “Four-Eye Well,” the oldest well on the street, with a history of over 400 years. Originally a large well, it was later divided into four stone-ringed openings with granite slabs to prevent residents from falling in while drawing water. Its unique shape earned it the name Four-Eye Well. **Recommended visit duration:** 1.5 hours
