National Stadium was completed on January 21, 2009, as the main venue for the opening and closing ceremonies and competitions of the 2009 World Games. It is a multi-purpose stadium capable of accommodating 40,000 spectators, with an additional potential expansion of 15,000 seats, serving as both an athletics field and a soccer field. It is also Taiwan's first stadium complying with the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) standards. Apart from facilities for international sporting events, it also features an outdoor performance plaza, adjacent commercial spaces, ecological green grids, and public art spaces. The National Stadium was designed by world-renowned architect Toyo Ito. Departing from traditional stadium concepts, he created the world's first open-air stadium structure, with a spiral external framework and a roof composed of solar photovoltaic panels, offering a harmonious blend of artistic aesthetics and dynamic design. The architectural construction avoids traditional materials, with 100% recyclable materials used for all components, and raw materials sourced entirely from Taiwan. The roof comprises 8,844 glass-pressed solar panels, effectively providing 70% shading, generating 1.1 million kWh of electricity annually, and reducing CO₂ emissions by 660 tons. This electricity not only supports the stadium's operations during events but can also be sold during non-event periods. Additionally, the construction achieved a zero-accident safety record, reflecting trends in energy conservation and setting a new standard for sports architecture. To help the public better understand the National Stadium's sports facilities, architectural design, ecological environmental practices, and public art, guided tours and interpretation services have been specifically arranged. Domestic and international visitors are warmly welcome to visit; please reserve a time in advance via phone or fax to facilitate the scheduling of接待安排 and guided tours.
