Daifukujin, in Japanese, was initially conceived to convey the pleasing qualities of white marble, rich ideals, abundant spirit, and the emotional richness, inclusiveness, leniency, generosity, and contemplation of people. Creator: Tetsuo Harada Personal Experience: After World War II, Tetsuo Harada was born in a small village called Niitsu, surrounded by rice fields (now part of Niigata City). His family were farmers, and his father became a blacksmith and later constructed buildings with metal structures. His eldest brother, Shigeo, served as the chairman, and is now managed by his son, Hisao, who is an architect. Harada's parents, Niichiro and Kikuno Harada, had 3 boys and 3 girls, with Tetsuo being the sixth. His father was the president of "Harada Tekojio" and highly valued education. Therefore, Harada's father allowed him to buy any books he wanted to aid his education and choose his own path. Tetsuo was well-versed in art and philosophy, and he learned music, including jazz and songs, and even taught himself to play the guitar and sing with his friends, often performing Beatles music. Creation Process: The author used the seven Japanese gods of fortune - Ebisu, Daikokuten, Bishamonten, Jurōjin, Fukurokuju, Benzaiten, and Hoteiosho - as a concept, specifically their bags, and created "Daifukujin" out of white marble. The work features a rounded, pleasing shape reminiscent of Japanese gods of fortune, attempting to showcase a sense of abundant emotions, a full spirit, and a combination of inclusiveness, leniency, generosity, and other images. It aims to convey happiness, peace, hope, and friendship.
