Legend has it the renaming of the station has an amusing back-story: during the Japanese era a member of the imperial family arrived on the emperor’s special train, and hearing the stationmaster repeatedly shout “Qiedongjiao” became very displeased, for it sounded like the Japanese phrase “low-class passenger.” Realizing later it was merely the station’s name and not an insult, he ordered the inelegant name changed to “Huatan.” Outside the station you’ll find a bicycle depot set up by enthusiastic locals, making it easy for visitors to cycle around Huatan.
