The Zhongzhen New Village Cultural Park is a place that holds memories of the Golden Triangle jungle and marks the new starting point for the "Foreign Legion" to settle in Taiwan. Back then, the Foreign Legion fought against communism and for the recovery of China, battling for years in Myanmar and Thailand, facing threats from war and diseases. In 1953 and 1954, they were withdrawn to Taiwan in two batches, with nearly 7,000 soldiers settling in Taoyuan and establishing Zhongzhen New Village. This land evolved from a haven to a home, gradually developing into a diverse community that blends Yunnanese, Burmese, and Thai cultures. As times changed, the cultural memories of Zhongzhen New Village persist. Local groups converted the old church and kindergarten into the Zhongzhen New Village Cultural Park, which includes spaces such as the Foreign Legion Story Museum, Memorial Square, and Cultural Classroom, to perpetuate historical value. The most eye-catching "Temple of Food and Drink" restaurant within the park, converted from a 60-year-old church, combines a vintage atmosphere with creative cuisine, making culture not only visible but also tasteable. Walking into the Foreign Legion Story Museum, one can travel back in time to that forgotten chapter in history. The museum presents five major themes: "Turmoil," "Calm," "Confusion," "Return," and "Integration," using models, installations, and interactive facilities to recreate the heroic and tragic years of the Foreign Legion. This place is not just a military memory but also a profound dialogue about peace and home. For a closer experience of the Foreign Legion spirit, one can challenge the "Foreign Legion Assault Range" within the park, where a simulation game provides a tangible experience of the tension of war, making history more touching. Tasting History: Exotic Kitchens in Zhongzhen Visiting Zhongzhen New Village, how could one miss the Yunnanese and Burmese flavors? The most representative dish is "rice noodles," made purely from rice, with nearly 60 restaurants in the village showcasing their specialties and attracting foodies repeatedly. Additionally, pea starch sheets, large thin sheets, savory buns, and papaya strips are also highly favored. As new residents from Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos join in, Zhongzhen's dining tables become richer, from homemade snacks to creative dishes, blending old and new, making Longgang a large kitchen of exotic flavors. Celebrating Culture: Keeping Traditions Alive Visiting during festivals can better convey the vitality of Zhongzhen's culture. The "Longgang Rice Noodle Festival" features activities like water splashing for blessings and fire dancing, and it has been listed as an international featured festival in the 2024 Taiwan Tourism Biennial Calendar; the "Zhongzhen Exuberant Festival" showcases the Lisu people's New Year traditions through bronze drums, rice cakes, and heaven-worshiping rituals; the "Foreign Legion Song and Wine Festival" displays the exuberant passion of the Golden Triangle culture through songs, dances, food, and wine for blessings. Additionally, the park offers experiences like ethnic costume try-ons and DIY rice noodles and papaya strips, allowing visitors not only to observe but also to personally create and taste, deeply imprinting culture into travel memories.
