The Bailimi Community was originally named “Bailimeng”. During the Qing Dynasty, the Suhua Highway was constructed, and the trail to Qilai was built, starting from Bailimi. During the Japanese period, mining industry was developed. The area was abundant in a special kind of tree called “jiangmou” which produces high-quality wood suitable for making wooden clogs. As a result, wooden clogs production became an important industry here. Although it declined for 20-30 years, the community used their imagination and creativity to revive the wooden clog industry. With the phrase “Bailimi Heart, Wooden Clog Affection”, Bailimi Wooden Clog Village gradually became a well-known tourist attraction. Through recreated slogans, the community came together and recalled their memories. From the folk saying “Bailiweng makes wooden clogs; take materials and catch them in the mountains”, they recalled their past. In 1998, the Wooden Clog Museum was established. Visitors can take a guided tour and experience making wooden clogs to learn about the industry and the Bailimi community.
