Google URL Shortener Discontinuation Notice

2025-08-19

Google URL Shortener (goo.gl) links will cease to be available after August 25, 2025. Google announced the deprecation of Google URL Shortener in 2018 in favor of Firebase Dynamic Links. Although existing goo.gl links were initially supported, most saw little to no traffic, leading to the decision to discontinue the service.

Developers using goo.gl links will be impacted, with these URLs returning a 404 response post-shutdown. However, links generated via Google apps like Maps will continue to function. Starting August 23, 2024, an interstitial page will be displayed for some goo.gl links, notifying users of the impending discontinuation.

Impact on Users

Any developers using links built with Google URL Shortener in the form https://goo.gl/* will be impacted. It is recommended to transition these links to another URL shortener provider.

Transition Guidance

To mitigate disruptions, developers can check if their links will be retained by visiting them. If a link redirects without a message, it will continue to work. For links showing an interstitial page, developers are advised to transition to another URL shortener. Adding the query parameter "si=1" to existing goo.gl links can suppress the interstitial page if it disrupts use cases.

Alternative Services

Several alternative URL shortening services are available, including Bitly, X.co, Y.ahoo.it, McAf.ee, and PPT.cc, each offering various features such as analytics, customization, and security scanning.
