The Eikan Gōqi Grassland, exposed to intense sun, dry with little rain, is not conducive to shrub growth. Low, wind‑tolerant grasses and shrubs grow around the terraces surrounding the Eikan settlement, forming a flat, lush green expanse known locally as the Eikan Grassland. The visual effect of the grassland resembles a soft, fluffy green blanket, with the summer grasslands being lush, vast, and clean. In 2002, a McDonald’s advertisement chose to market the Eikan Grassland worldwide during the winter season, featuring the bleak “furiously dancing dry grass” under the monsoon wind. From the viewpoint of the Eikan Grassland, it appears vast yet not exhausting. The Eikan Grassland feels very European, with agave and heavenly chrysanthemum dots pointing skyward. In summer, visitors sometimes release kites at dusk, creating a relaxed atmosphere. During the Japanese occupation, twenty yellow oxen were once let loose here. After the population migrated and farmland was left fallow, only a few old cows, forgotten from the old farming days, now crawl across the grassland. Occasionally, residents from neighboring villages let their cows here, making the Eikan Grassland suddenly bustling with cattle sounds. Currently, sheep are also let loose, adding a lively touch.
The Gōqi Grassland refers to the area from the top of the deep trench and the lip of the head to the columnar basalt of the big leaf, which has never been the core of Eikan’s industrial activities, yet it remains a prominent element in sketches of Eikan’s scenery.
