Tree River

2024-04-11
台北市大安區敦化南路一段與忠孝東路三段路口
Upon exiting the Zhongxiao Dunden Station of the Nangang Metro Line, one is immediately greeted by the public art installation "Tree River," composed of massive stainless steel plates and granite, standing on a pedestrian island. At night, the structure is softly illuminated by LCD lights, creating a completely different atmosphere.
"Tree River" was co-created by artists Chen Jian and Tsai Shu-ying. Originally, trees, rocks, and flowing water were the natural features of the mountainous Taipei Basin. However, at some point, the once mountain-encircled appearance of Taipei was gradually concealed by urban developments, becoming a distant memory. The artwork employs painted trees on walls, stones suspended in the air, and sourceless water to remind us of Taipei’s past. Meanwhile, through lifelike and playful silhouettes of human figures, it showcases the diversity of urban life and bridges the gap between the public and the artwork. The tree shadows arranged with lighting and the real trickling water offer a calming night view, easing the stresses of the bustling city.
