The uniquely shaped Jingtong Electronic Sky Lantern House is the landmark of Jingtong town. Its architecture blends the culture of Pingxi sky lanterns, cleverly merging into the local landscape and skyline; its distinctive façade always catches travelers’ eyes first. When night falls, a dazzling light show begins, bringing lively color to this quiet mountain town—like a prayer lantern standing at the end of Jingtong Old Street, softly glowing for Pingxi. Coming along Highway 106 from Mucha or Shiding, visitors see this building first. The Jingtong Electronic Sky Lantern House is built from a 9-meter glass curtain wall and nearly 150,000 LEDs. The first floor has public restrooms, the second houses a visitor-information counter and snack shop, and the third offers an observation deck with panoramic views. From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on operating days, a light show plays every hour, introducing the origin of sky lanterns and Pingxi’s local features. Custom “LED wishing lanterns” are also available: visitors write or attach photos and blessings onto sky-lantern postcards, then watch their wishes rise on the main lantern in the square—an experience quite different from releasing a traditional sky lantern. The finished postcard can be taken home as a souvenir.
