The Origin of the Name "Bai Shi Hu" When it comes to "Bai Shi Hu," we must first understand the origin of its name. It's said that early settlers referred to relatively low and open areas in the mountains, which naturally formed a valley, as a "lake." At the same time, the area was rich in white sandstone, which gave rise to the name "Bai Shi Hu." So, "Bai Shi Hu" isn't actually a lake. During the late Qing dynasty, in the Guangxu period, a quarry was established in the Neihu mountain area, and the stones used to build the Taipei city walls were sourced from here. Due to its strategic location, Bai Shi Hu was a battleground between Lin Xiao Wen, a rebel against the Qing dynasty, and the Qing army in 1787. It was also once inhabited by the Kedagelan tribe. The Kedagelan tribe originally lived on the west bank of the Keelung River in Songshan. However, due to the influence of Han Chinese settlers during the Qing dynasty, they gradually moved to the Bai Shi Hu area and were renamed "Xin Li Zu" (New Tribe) to distinguish themselves from the "Jiu Li Zu" (Old Tribe) in Songshan. Today, the Kedagelan tribe has been integrated into Han Chinese society and has disappeared. After Taiwan's recovery, the area was renamed "Bishan Village" due to the presence of the Bishan Rock and the temple of the Opened Lantau Saint King. Later, in 1968, it was officially renamed "Bishan Li" to this day. Surrounded by Mountains - Bai Shi Hu The Bai Shi Hu community, surrounded by mountains, has a development history dating back over 200 years to the Qianlong period of the Qing dynasty. It is nestled among several mountains, including Bishan, Bai Shi Hu, Dacun Head, Kaiyan, Dajian (now known as Zhongyong), and Xiaojian (now known as Yuanjue). Bai Shi Hu is located in the Neihu district, with an elevation of about 250-450 meters, making it the highest community in the district. The area features a valley terrain with a subtropical broadleaf forest ecosystem, making it suitable for developing leisure agriculture. In addition to being a local resident's backyard, the area has become a popular choice for Taipei residents to visit on weekends. The region offers several other recreational attractions, including the Bai Shi Hu suspension bridge, Houhu Wetland (Concentric Circle Ecological Wetland), Guchui Pond, Husband and Wife Trees, Shik'an Huang-style ancient house (Ziyun Residence). The Neihu Strawberry Season Every year from December to May is the strawberry season in Neihu, with March and April being the peak periods. There are several strawberry farms in Neihu suitable for family, couple, or friend gatherings for a day trip. Some farms offer various agricultural experiences, such as strawberry jam DIY and pizza-making. Visitors can enjoy the delicious strawberries and take in the beautiful scenery of Neihu.
