Hengwen Temple in Yuanlin City, Changhua County, dedicated to the Supreme Lord of the North, is famous for its nearly ten-story-tall statue of the deity and is the tallest statue of Xuantian Shangdi in Southeast Asia. In recent years, miraculous events have been reported: on the fourth floor inside the statue—roughly at the level of the heart—there is a small floor area about 50 cm square in front of the shrine. When one stands on it with both feet, the spot feels warm, yet the warmth cannot be sensed by touch. It is well worth experiencing firsthand to feel this divine sign. Research confirms that the statue at Hengwen Temple is the largest Xuantian Shangdi image in Taiwan. Within the statue, besides enshrining Doumu Yuanjun (Mother of the Big Dipper) and the sixty Tai Sui star deities, the interior walls were specially commissioned to Pingtung artisans. Following historical records brought back from Wudang Mountain in China, they depict the Supreme Lord’s cultivation and enlightenment, creating the only complete set of murals in Taiwan illustrating the deity’s path to immortality. Rich in religious art and value, the temple has attracted extensive media coverage and a steady stream of visitors, jointly extolling the divine might of Xuantian Shangdi.
