Chinese (Simplified)JapaneseEnglishKoreanThe Ai-Goo ancient stone houses are the most culturally significant landmarks in Penghu's local area. In the Hejie community, the old houses of "Yong Cheng" consist of three sections, reaching their peak with three rows, eight rooms, and four halls totaling 48 compartments. Around the 1640s, due to family wealth and population growth, a large-scale ancestral complex was constructed. At its height, there were eight living quarters accommodating more than 100 people living together. They also operated "Yongcheng No." candied fruit shop for general commerce; their prosperity was widely known in Hejie village, thus forming the small residential cluster called "Yongcheng." By the late 1960s, these eight luxurious dwellings gradually fell into disarray. Today one can still witness the beauty of Penghu's traditional residential architecture and examine its historical trajectory. Traditional Penghu homes favor stone-built windows or carved latticed stonewindows, not only because they integrate structurally with walls but also provide better resistance against Penghu's strong sea winds and weathering threats. This is why only the stone windows remain standing while other parts of ancient dwellings have collapsed. A row of Ai-Goo stone walls can be seen at the rear of the houses, blocking the fierce northern winds. There are three windows preserved in the wall for ship-watching and monitoring tides. 【Suggested Stop Time】 0.5 hours
