The Bei-Yi Highway is a 58-kilometer road in northern Taiwan that connects Taipei and Yilan. After descending from Jinmian Mountain in Toucheng Township, Yilan County, it reaches the Lanyang Plain and ends at the junction with Qingyun Road (Provincial Highway 2c) in Toucheng Township (at the 70 km mark of Provincial Highway 9). Along the way it passes through Xindian, Shiding, and Pinglin Districts in New Taipei City, as well as Toucheng Township in Yilan County.
The Shiding section of the Bei-Yi Highway is a mountainous cycling challenge: start from Bitan in Xindian, follow the Bei-Yi Highway (Provincial Highway 9), turn left onto Highway 47 or 47-1 toward Shiding, connect to Highway 106b to Shuangxikou, then take Highway 106 all the way to Shenkeng. The route is a constant series of climbs and descents, testing a rider’s strength and endurance, yet the scenery is beautiful—especially in March, when the hills blaze with pink Formosan cherry blossoms; the petals swirl through the air, refreshing the spirit. There are no bike-rental stations along the route, so you must bring your own bicycle.
