The Temple of the Impartial King of Hell—Haiching Temple in Siao-lun, Sihu—enshrines none other than King Yama himself: Bao Zheng, the Dragon Diagram Hall scholar-official of the Northern Song, universally hailed as “Justice Bao.” When ground was broken for the present main hall in 1993, master carpenter Liu Hung-lin was commissioned to build it entirely with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery; not a single nail was used, at a cost of ten thousand gold pieces. The ancestral shrine of the only Justice Bao temple in all Taiwan, it stands beside the Siao-lun Seashore in Sihu. Its architecture is imposing, and adjoining it lies Haiching Park, a tranquil spot perfect for family outings on weekends.
