Henry Mazer was born in Chicago, USA, and served as a conductor for many orchestras. He dedicated himself to music education in Chicago schools. In 1986, the Chicago mayor designated May 24th as "Henry Mazer Day." After his first visit to Taiwan in 1981, Mazer founded the "Taipei Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra" in 1985, which expanded and was renamed "Taipei Philharmonic Chamber and Symphonic Orchestra" in 1991. His refined musical cultivation established the performing standards of the Taipei Philharmonic and earned international acclaim. Mazer passed away in August 2002; to preserve the Taipei Philharmonic's achievements in Taiwan's music field and honor the enduring "sound of Mazer," the "Taipei Philharmonic and Henry Mazer Music Cultural Center" was established. It continues to carry the Taipei Philharmonic's mission in bridging and promoting refined music culture between Taiwan and the global community.
The Taipei Philharmonic and Henry Mazer Music Cultural Center introduces the history of the Taipei Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, performance records, critiques, photos, and posters from worldwide performances. It also features a rehearsal room with photos and important manuscripts related to Mazer. Since May 2007, the center has officially introduced sophisticated audiovisual functions, offering visitors coffee and a selection of music merchandise, marking a new chapter for the Taipei Philharmonic post-Mazer era, and adding a new cultural and leisure option to the Shandao Temple MRT Station. The newly renovated venue preserves Mazer's cultural relics and exhibitions while introducing new forms of art exhibits. At the same time, the Taipei Philharmonic Chamber Ensemeble was established to host chamber concerts and masterclasses every Saturday afternoon, enriching musical expressions through chamber music and introducing classical music and other genres in an accessible manner, bringing the internationally acclaimed sound of the Taipei Philharmonic to the community.
The Taipei Philharmonic and Henry Mazer Music Cultural Center provides performance, appreciation, listening, reading, and audiovisual functions. Venue rental services are also available for government organizations and groups, welcoming press conferences, lectures, product launches, and cultural events. After the cultural center's establishment, the Taipei Philharmonic continues to strive to offer Taiwan more diverse and refined music, fulfilling cultural exchange missions and ideals with the most beautiful sound.
