Located to the west of the main island of Penghu, West Island gets its name accordingly; its nickname is "Yuyong Island" or "Old Fisher's Island." Since ancient times, the waters of the Taiwan Strait have been rich in fishery resources, and numerous fishing vessels operated off the western shores of West Island, which led European settlers to broadly refer to all the Penghu Archipelago as "Old Fisher's Island." The Yuyong Island Visitor Center is situated on the West Island side of Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge. Inside, visitors can enjoy informative exhibitions and professional guided tours introducing the area's cultural and artistic atmosphere. Ascending to the observation deck offers a full view of the side profile of Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge. Facing the visitor center is the iconic bronze statue known as "Old Fisher," standing in Xiyu Township for over 30 years as it symbolizes the prosperity of West Island's fishing industry. After decades of exposure to the elements with sun and sea wind causing corrosion and weathering, the statue was polished and renovated in 2021, restoring its original appearance. In front of the visitor center lies "Fish Leaping with Abundance," a vibrant sculpture created by artist Hong Yi. Centered on the sacred fish species *Daimao Shiban* (spotted moray eel), the artwork blends Penghu's cultural heritage, natural landscapes, and ecological characteristics. Through imaginative sculptural forms, it aims to raise global awareness of Penghu's marine environment.
