新北市烏來區瀑布路1-2號
In the early 1940s and 1950s, outsiders who came to the Wulai area to make a living mostly settled along the hand-pushed tram tracks for the convenience of moving trams and logging tools, mainly near the Wulai Tram Station and the timber yard at Guishan. At first they simply built wooden shacks; over time they rebuilt them into brick-tiled houses and concrete bungalows. What had started as temporary quarters for tram workers gradually became a settlement crowded with families. Because it grew out of the tram workers’ gathering, locals usually call the place “Che-liao-ping” or “Che-a-liao,” forming a distinctive community life. The Wulai Forestry Life Hall, next to the tram ticket office, is a museum planned by the Forestry Bureau after five years of preparation. It presents a detailed history of forestry in Wulai, so if you don’t know much about the inseparable ties between the Wulai tram and the timber industry, this is a great place to start. Preserving Wulai’s tram culture and providing a new generation with a window onto the past, the hall uses working-process models and videos re-enacting labor scenes to effectively showcase the tram’s history. Exhibits are explained in Chinese, English, and Japanese, offering a space for international cultural exchange and learning. Coordinated with the operation of the Wulai tram, it provides a high-quality venue for educational experiences. The hall also hosts occasional hands-on woodworking workshops, a fun activity enjoyed by adults and children alike!
