Adding a pair of binoculars to a bicycle can make bird-watching simple. Located near Donggang in Yilan, the LanYang River estuary is a typical river mouth alluvial fan terrain where the Yilan River, Dongshan River, and LanYang River meet. The accumulated sand dunes form a marshy area, making it a habitat not only for fish like eel seedlings but also for many water birds. It's a popular international bird-watching spot, and the IUCN Asian Wetland Survey has listed it as "one of Taiwan's twelve major wetlands." From October to April of the following year, migratory birds winter here, and it's the best time for tourists to watch birds, especially from November to March. As Taiwan's most important water bird stopover, the LanYang River estuary has recorded 236 bird species. With the LanYang plain backed by mountains and facing the sea, it has numerous wetlands, sandbars, and is centrally located on the Pacific route. This makes it a resting place for migratory birds traveling south or north, a paradise for bird enthusiasts. During the spring northward migration, waves of birds can be seen flying south to north. Every year, rare birds such as the black-faced spoonbill, white-fronted goose, greylag goose, gray crane, black stork, oystercatcher, little egret, harlequin duck, and northern pintail stay or pass through. In addition, you can spot gulls here all year round, and it's the place with the most gull species in Taiwan. During the migratory seasons, many bird enthusiasts bring their families, binoculars, and spotting scopes to observe the wild birds. They can hear the waves and see the ever-changing water patterns, as well as the distant Guishan Island. You can ride a bike along the coastal bike path, enjoying the leisurely bird-watching and scenic views.
