Mei‑nong was formerly known as “Mī‑nóng.” During the Qing Dynasty, Hakka people from Pingtung Lijiang crossed the Lāo‑nóng Creek and arrived at Yùe‑guang Mountain in Mei‑nong, where they established “Mī‑nóng Village.” When the village was founded, the sixteen families who settled there built 24 longhouses, naming the street “Yǒng‑ān” Street to pray for permanent safety. It has a history of over two hundred years and was the earliest and most prosperous street developed at that time. From the Jiè‑zì Pavilion on the western side of Mī‑nóng Village to the Eastern Gate Tower, a distance of about two kilometres is filled with a rustic, nostalgic atmosphere: Dè‑shèng Temple, Bèigōng Shrine, Song‑House School, ancient wells, Hakka blue‑shirt shops, Mei‑nong Old Bridge and irrigation channels, as well as countless ancient Hakka longhouses and beautiful gatehouses, all telling the story of two centuries of change and beauty. When you’re tired, you can stop at the market to try some salty, delicious Hakka snacks. To experience Hakka village culture, visit the Hakka Cultural Museum for an in‑depth look, or stroll along the irrigation channel to enjoy the picturesque scenery of Mei‑nong. Every eave, every turn is an elegant history and moving experience. Yǒng‑ān Old Street is truly a microcosm of Hakka culture and the jewel of Mei‑nong.
