Simplified Chinese Japanese English Korean Penghu Xingren Cai Jin Shi The Xingren Cai Jin Shi Building is located in the northern part of Xingsheng Village, Maungong City. It was built by the Penghu Jin Shi Cai Tinglan High School alumnus, and has stood since the twenty-sixth year of Daoguang (1846) until today. Cai Tinglan, descendant of the Xingren Cai family, became the first and only native Penghu Jin Shi in the twenty-fourth year of Daoguang (1844). Born in the sixth year of Jiaqing (1801), Cai Tinglan entered the exam at the age of thirteen as a junior scholar, later entered the academy, and repeatedly passed the exam, becoming a junior scholar of the Penghu Department. He was known for his integrity and love of learning, and he taught at Chongwen Academy, Yinxin Academy, and Wen Shi Academy. He became a licentiate in the autumn exam of the seventeenth year of Daoguang (1837). In the spring of the twenty-fourth year of Daoguang (1844), he was promoted to Jin Shi at the Beijing Examination, and was immediately assigned to Jiangxi Province. After that, he served in various posts on the mainland, eventually rising to the rank of Tongzhi. He died of illness in his office in the ninth year of Xianfeng (1859). Three years after Cai Jin Shi, in the twenty-sixth year of Daoguang (1846), he returned to his hometown to worship his ancestors and built the Jin Shi Building next to his ancestral house to honor the family name. The architectural features of the Jin Shi Building include a porch that is 4.5 meters wide and about 3.3 meters deep, with a recessed facade. Its side rooms use the Ma Bei hard mountain style, and the roof is a hard mountain with a swallow‑tail ridge, the only one of its kind in Penghu residential architecture. The other architectural elements and decorations in the house are also exquisite. In 2013, the Penghu County “Cai Tinglan Jin Shi Building” was declared a historical monument.
