The Donglong Temple was built by the early immigrants of Sanliao Bay who followed Zheng Chenggong to Taiwan for pioneering. In order to ensure a safe crossing, they specially invited the image of King Li to bless them. Later, the people were inspired by the great power of King Li, and initially built simple shelters and public buildings to worship him. The Donglong Temple was designed in traditional Fujian style, and the main deities worshiped inside are King Li, King Wen, King Wu, King Chi, and the Emperor of Good Health. The temple also houses two boats that are permanently stationed inside, one made of wood and the other made of copper. They were built in 1976. The copper boat is the only Quanzhou-style ancient sailing boat in Taiwan, with intricate carvings of sailors and boat houses, and vividly shaped figures. It has great artistic value of folk culture. The culture and beliefs of the King Boat originated from the Donggang River basin in Pingtung. In order to promote the unique culture of the hometown of the King, the temple built a cultural center next to the Donglong Temple, on the 3rd and 4th floors, featuring three theme halls: the King Belief Hall, the Water Margin Heroes Hall, and the Folklore Hall. They showcase the power and beauty of religion. The lively "King Boat Sending" activity is held every three years. On this occasion, people bid farewell to King Wen by sending his wooden boat, known as the "Wen Wang Boat", to sail on behalf of heaven. The boat is set off on the first day of the 11th lunar month, the birthday of King Wen. Before setting sail, the boat makes a tour around the village to receive worship. After that, it is burned. The believers believe that after King Wen finishes his inspection, he will ascend to heaven to report to the Jade Emperor and then return to the temple to sit and govern. This activity has become a famous Taiwanese religious and cultural event!
