Kaohsiung Shoushan Zoo is the largest public zoo in southern Taiwan, administered by the Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau. It is one of three city-run zoos in Taiwan, second only to Taipei City Zoo in scale. In 2022, the zoo improved animal habitats and outdoor spaces, establishing animal-friendly aerial observation corridors. This design allows residents and visitors of Kaohsiung to observe the charming daily lives of animals from unique angles with minimal disturbance, making it an ideal venue for family leisure, outdoor education, and ecological science popularization. The zoo promotes friendly observation of animals and their habitats by softening boundaries with vegetation and creating aerial corridors that weave through the animals' environment. Mesh panels along both sides increase in height, enabling visitors to blend into the surroundings and view animal interactions from elevated positions. Walk into two elevated viewing shelters on the bridge and four suspended observation pathways beneath. Through large glass panels, visitors can experience the animals' environments closely: capybaras relaxing in ponds, lions lounging in the sun, or Formosan black bears scratching themselves on tree trunks. These authentic, endearing moments transport visitors into the animals' homes, offering immersive insights into their living spaces. The renovated Shoushan Zoo has evolved into a harmonious natural viewing site. The park’s layout and roads have been optimized, with a scenic train now available to guide visitors. Educational videos and interactive signage along the routes help all ages learn more about animal behaviors. The water plaza has transformed into a playful fountain area with mist resembling a chimney, allowing children to splash in refreshing pools. Aging enclosures have been renovated, with rooftops partially removed to introduce sunlight and rain, improving ventilation, cleanliness, and drainage. This creates comfortable living spaces for animals. New attraction at Shoushan Zoo: Capybaras The zoo introduced capybaras and implements mixed grazing with herbivores like alpacas and mini donkeys. Visitors can observe animal behaviors from above or walk down to the exhibition hall for level-eye close-up views, witnessing how they graze, sleep, and play in their own "homes." Don’t miss the "star animals" of Shoushan Zoo, treasures of Kaohsiung: the Formosan black bear "Bobby," red pandas "Ah Hong and Mi Mi," the dashing white tiger "Zhao Hai," the veteran African elephant "Ali," and the adorable meerkat family—all endearments are guaranteed to melt hearts with their every movement.
