In 1959 AD (ROC 48), founders 康萬生 and 許安綿 (the current shop owner, Grandma 阿綿阿嬤) opened the “東益成商號” citrus shop (grocery store), selling cigarettes, alcohol, tea, rice, oil, salt, salted fish canned goods, daily household items, candy, biscuits, and many other items—more varied and diverse than today’s convenience stores. The period from ROC 55 to 70 was the golden era of 東益成商號. At that time it was still the Puli main station of Changhua Bus. People traveling to Changhua’s Lukang from the Puli area bought tickets at our shop, and the business was very lively. Although modern Taiwanese people usually shop at convenience stores, PX Mart, or large supermarkets, there is always a lack of a personal touch. That personal touch is the greatest motivation for Grandma 阿綿阿嬤 to keep the old shop going. She enjoys chatting with young customers and checking in on neighbors.
