For nearly a century, the Lin family of Wufeng, Taiwan’s city-building premier Wu Luan-chi, and thousands of other merchant magnates have used precious cement tiles to adorn their homes, proclaiming their families’ wealth. Taiwan is thus filled with a world-class, treasured tile culture. Yet, amid urban renewal, soaring land prices have led to the demolition of thousands of tiled old houses. We are a group of cement-tile volunteers—ordinary office workers—who have spent twenty years and our life savings quietly rescuing thousands of century-old tiles for Taiwan. We established a restoration center and, step by step, are building a comprehensive archive on this land, hoping to leave future generations a valuable photographic record. Beyond preservation, we also provide these precious tiles free of charge to support the ongoing restoration of Taiwan’s old houses.
