Simple Chinese, Japanese, English, Korean The massive columnar basalt of Dà Guàyè is a majestic basalt wall. It was formed when magma beneath the ocean rose, cooled, and contracted. The resulting rock columns, typically five- or six-sided, fractured along what are known as columnar joints. The entire cliff face of Dà Guàyè is composed of these columnar joints, and their impressive height creates a unique landscape. After heavy rains, the hollows in front of the basalt capture the accumulated water, and the towering cliff reflects on the water’s surface, producing a striking and surprising sight. This phenomenon attracts many visitors who come to photograph it, making it one of Xiyu Township’s special natural attractions. The discovery of Dà Guàyè’s columnar basalt dates back to the Japanese colonial period, when a pier was planned on Dà Guàyè Beach to facilitate maritime transport between Xiyu and Magong. During the construction, stone blocks and soil at the site of the columnar basalt were excavated to fill the harbor, inadvertently revealing the basalt that had lain dormant for a thousand years.
