The "Su Shu Lou" was the former residence of the master of Chinese scholarship, Mr. Qian Mu. In the 56th year of the Republic of China (1967), Mr. Qian and his wife moved to Taiwan from Hong Kong to find a site for a house, securing the present site along Wai Shuangxi Stream. To commemorate his mother's maternal merits and care, Mr. Qian named his secluded home-in-his-advanced-years the same name as his mother's "Su Shu Hall" in his late childhood home, which housed a five-generation household at Nixi Qifang Bridge in Wuxi. Every brick, stone, blade of grass, and tree within the courtyard of the Su Shu Lou were meticulously cultivated as the efforts and devotion of its owner over the years.
During his time in Taiwan, Mr. Qian continuously delivered lectures and authored scholarly works. In class, Mr. Qian always exuded vitality, enabling listeners to appreciate the profound and vast Chinese culture, deeply touching them, and hence the lecture hall of Su Shu Lou was frequently packed with attendees.
In the 79th year of the Republic of China (1990), Mr. Qian moved out of Su Shu Lou for certain reasons; unfortunately, he passed away three months later. In commemoration of Mr. Qian Mu, the government designated the Su Shu Lou as the "Mr. Qian Mu Memorial Hall" on the 6th of January, in the 81st year of the Republic of China (1992), entrusting the management to the Taipei Municipal Library. In the 90th year of the Republic of China (2001), the Taipei City Government transferred the management of the Su Shu Lou to the Department of Cultural Affairs (MOC). On the 31st of December, in the 90th year of the Republic of China (2001), the Department of Cultural Affairs entrusted the Su Shu Lou, renamed as "Qian Mu's Former Residence," to Tamkang University for operation. This was subsequently transferred to National Taipei University of Education (originally Taipei Municipal Teachers College) on the 1st of January, in the 100th year of the Republic of China (2011).
To revive the scene of the Su Shu Lou lecture hall promoting traditional Chinese culture, Taipei Municipal University currently organizes a series of lectures related to traditional historical culture within the former residence for the benefit of the general public.
