The quaint, old-time Taiwanese flavor of Douliu’s Taiping Old Street is lined with Western-style townhouses built mainly in Baroque style; between the lanes you’ll find traditional Taiwanese treats like dan-fan rice, yuan-zi shaved ice, pork meatballs, and squid-belly soup, drawing foreign tourists on purpose and filling the air with the nostalgic atmosphere beloved by senior visitors.
Taiping Old Street lies on Taiping Road in Douliu City, Yunlin County, stretching about 600 meters. Taiping Road has long been Douliu’s principal shopping street; the street’s buildings are designed chiefly in Baroque style, erected during the Japanese colonial period more than 90 years ago. Each townhouse stands two stories tall, and some bear the family surname carved in stone; walls and façades are decorated with exquisite, lifelike reliefs that not only display architectural artistry but also proclaim the prominence of distinguished clans.
