雲林縣西螺鎮興農西路6號
The last of the four great academies, built in 1797, was originally the Wen-chang Di-jun Shrine. It once hosted poetry gatherings for many literati and scholars, brimming with humanistic spirit; it is the sole survivor among Yunlin’s four great academies. The plaque on its beam, preserved since the Jiaqing period, is hailed as a national treasure. Zhen-wen Academy stands at the intersection of Xing-nong West Road and Wen-chang Road. Its predecessor, the Wen-chang Di-jun Shrine, was erected in 1797 (the second year of the Jiaqing reign). It enshrines the five Wen-chang emperors: Zi-tong, Wen-heng, Fu-you, Zhu-yi, and Lü-yi, collectively known as the “Five Lords of Literature.” Locals call it the “Literary Shrine.” Inside, the Zhen-wen, Tan, and Yi-fu poetry societies once met, providing a gathering place for lovers of verse. In 1812 (the 17th year of Jiaqing), Wang You-cheng of the Zhen-wen Society proposed founding an academy; gentry such as Liao Cheng-he generously funded its construction, and it was completed the following year. A venerable 1813 (Jiaqing gui-you) plaque hanging from its beam reads “Forefather of Learning for a Thousand Years,” making it the only remaining academy in Yunlin County.
