The history of Tianliao Cold Spring is quite long. In its early years, the soil in Tianliao District was barren and water sources were scarce. Residents discovered cold springs flowing from rock fissures, so people settled near the water, using the cold springs for living and irrigation, making the precious carbonated cold spring the life-giving spring that nurtured Tianliao District. After the Japanese army stationed there, they found this to be a rare carbonated cold spring in the world and established a police health resort in the cold spring area, giving rise to the local hot spring culture. Tianliao Cold Spring is a naturally flowing carbonated sodium bicarbonate spring, with a pH of 7 and an average temperature of 22°C. It is a clear, colorless, low-temperature hot spring with a slight sulfurous taste. During the Japanese colonial period, people used the hot spring for heating and bathing. Because of its pure, gentle warmth, it is known as the "beauty skin" spring, and it is the only area in southern Taiwan with a cold spring.
