The only specialty museum for Jiāo zhǐ táo (a type of clay figurine) in Taiwan is located at the cultural center opposite North Gate Railway Station of Alishan Railway. Jiayi is the hometown of Jiāo zhǐ táo, also known as "Jiayi燒" in Japanese. Most artists of Jiāo zhǐ táo learned their skills in Jiayi. Taiwanese people simply call Jiāo zhǐ táo "Jiāo zhǐ", "Jiāo zhǐ gū lāng" or "Jiāo zhǐ lāi". In the early days, Jiāo zhǐ táo was mostly used for decorative purposes in temple architecture. Traditional subjects are centered on people such as fishermen, woodcutters, farmers, and scholars. These subjects are often paired with images of insects, fish, birds and animals, plants, and scenes of operas. The main subjects are clearly distinguished from the supporting ones, and the overall picture is harmonious.
