新竹縣湖口鄉湖口老街
In 1893, the railway crossing Taiwan was equipped with a railway station at Old Lake Port which became the center of transportation and economy and boosted the development of the old street. From 1914, special "big square architecture" was built combining red brick building materials from South China, plus the hallmarks of relief carvings, which were full of elegant atmosphere. As the railway station moved in 1929, the old street declined gradually. After recent revitalization, it showed its elegance once again. Although the old street has been washed of its former glory and now presents itself with a quiet and elegant demeanor, it still attracts numerous writers and scholars to visit. Although there is a highway beside it, walking into the old street of Lake Port feels like entering another space. The wooden railway station standing in front of the Catholic Church quietly tells the stories of the bygone railway era. The low house forms and brick-red Baroque architecture, three-dimensional carvings on the fascia, antique shop fronts and well-preserved arched arcades all stack up to the history of the street in the early years of the Republic of China. From the Catholic Church to the San Yuan Temple at the end of the street, the whole street is about 300 meters long and 10 meters wide. Every inch of it boasts elegant architecture that brings people endless surprises. On the street, there are not only local residents' homes but also old clinics, literature and history studios, cafes, restaurants, soy milk and tofu shops and more. The delicious food in the eateries such as braised pork belly with ginger strips blended with rich aromatic coffee smells make people feel like the perfect combination of Chinese and Western styles. When tourists take a stroll, they may as well step into the local humanities studios for a deeper experience of the new look of old Lake Port.
