A Japanese chef at the helm—Chiayi’s only SUNTORY “Divine Foam” master pub.
The first sip of beer is the best sip: the foam is at its richest, the liquid at its most delicious. The quality of the head decides how great a draft can be. The legendary top-tier “Divine Foam” is now available in Chiayi at “Barley & Wheat,” the city’s sole SUNTORY-certified master pub, run by a Japanese chef. Authentic Japanese small plates and god-level foamy draft make the perfect pair.
To promote true izakaya culture and avoid misunderstandings, the booking page lists a few “house rules”: guests who don’t drink are strongly advised not to come, and the place is not a regular Japanese restaurant—no sushi, no chawanmushi, no skewer-only menu. The owners want a spot where even a solo customer can drop in after work for a drink and a snack.
Recommended dishes: mandatory spicy raw octopus, teriyaki chicken skin, cabbage salad, plus seasonal specials from the chef. The proprietress lets slip that they’ll soon bring in free-range Alishan top-grade chicken—golden-crisp skin, bouncy meat, a carnivore’s dream.
