Zhu Zi Hu is located in the core area of Yangming Mountain National Park, with an altitude of about 650-670 meters. To the north is Xiao Guanyin Mountain, to the east is Qixing Mountain, to the west is Datan Mountain, and to the south, it opens up to overlook the Taipei Basin. Originally, it was a "dammed lake" formed by volcanic eruptions 350,000 years ago. Due to erosion, a gap formed, and the lake water gradually drained, forming a depression. Since ancient times, it has been divided into three enclosed areas: Donghu, Dinghu, and Xiahu. Donghu refers to the area around Huti Elementary School, which is the original point of the name Zhu Zi Hu. Dinghu refers to the area beyond Huti Bridge, following the right side of the industrial road, a small basin of about 20 hectares, which is located at a higher elevation above Donghu, hence the name Dinghu. Xiahu refers to the basin area around the Calla Lily Avenue today. The Zhu Zi Hu Stream flows through it, and since it is located at a relatively lower position compared to Donghu, it is called Xiahu.
The Origin of the Name Zhu Zi Hu
Zhu Zi Hu was originally a dammed lake formed by volcanic lava eruptions. As the lake water gradually disappeared, it became a wetland. The Kavalan people of the Pingpu tribes began to settle and cultivate the land over a thousand years ago. When Han people first arrived here 200 years ago for development, they found the land muddy and covered with bamboo forests, so they called this place Zhu Zi Hu (in Hokkien, "hu" means muddy land). There is also an old local legend that because the mountain basin area was once full of arrow bamboo forests, and the mountain winds blew down the mountain, causing the arrow bamboo forests to sway, creating an image as if the lake water was rippling, hence the name Zhu Zi Hu.
Calla Lily Season in Zhu Zi Hu
During the Calla Lily season (from Feb 27 to Apr 17), on holidays (including weekends), traffic control measures will be implemented in the Zhu Zi Hu area, with one-way traffic along the clockwise direction from the west of Huti Bridge to the Calla Lily Avenue. The Calla Lily Avenue will be one-way only up to the intersection with Zhongzheng Mountain. In addition, the section from Huti Bridge to Donghu will allow two-way traffic, while the Dinghu section will be one-way only and no turning around is allowed. The traffic guidance will be directed through the newly built stone path to exit to Yangjin Highway. The traffic control in the Zhu Zi Hu area will be in effect during holidays from 9 am to 6 pm. The time may be adjusted flexibly according to the actual traffic flow. Due to the limited road width in the Zhu Zi Hu area, it is recommended that those who plan to visit use public transportation, such as the MRT or buses. For more information on public transportation, please visit the Taipei City Department of Transportation website.
