The entire island of Yuanbei is hilly, and it got its name because its shape closely resembles a shell covering water. When you arrive at Yuanbei Island, you can ride a bicycle or take a walk around the island to enjoy the local scenery. If you wander down the village paths, you’ll see “cai-zhai” built out of coral stone, arranged in neat squares. These are walls constructed by locals to protect crops from strong winds. On the northern coast of Yuanbei Island, the columnar basalt and the well‑fractured columnar basalt cliff on the northeast side have been heavily eroded by waves, resulting in a highly varied shape with many folds. The northern part of Yuanbei Island features diverse basalt forms, including columnar, inclined, and columnar types. Notable geological attractions such as stone brushes, stone inks, unmarked stone tablets, graphite, and pleated skirts are famous landmarks here—an essential visit for anyone coming to the area.
