Simplified Chinese Japanese English Korean Dongchang Military Base (Xiyu West Fort), construction began on April 25, 1903 (Meiji 36) and was completed on October 25, 1904 (Meiji 37). It is a coastal defense fortification consisting of three gun mounts and six gun positions. It was one of the key fortresses of Penghu Islands during the Japanese colonial period and is now one of the potential attractions in Xiyu Township. The military historical sites here include: Xiyu Gunpowder Depot (Copper Wall Iron Wall Ammunition Depot), soil-cave style cooling gunpowder depot, cave-style smokeless gunpowder depot, smoky gunpowder depot, Xiyu East Fort attached gun emplacement, Dongbitou Zhenyang Force, tunnel gun fort, East Tai Tiger Banner Camp Area (Xiyu East Fort), and Dongchang Military Base (Xiyu West Fort). The scattered gun emplacements, forts, ammunition depots, and other historical buildings and military facilities create this highly distinctive military landscape. Currently, the facilities built during the Japanese colonial period—including gun emplacements, underground tunnels, and forts—are being reorganized and restored. The Dongchang Military Base has gradually completed essential public service facilities such as a parking lot and public toilets. In the future, it can integrate local military relics and historical cultural resources, incorporate explanations of wartime life, and reshape the new image of tourism in the Xiyu area.
