The South Gate, also known as the Li Zheng Gate, was completed in 1884 (the 10th year of the Guangxu Emperor's reign) and was the main gate of the Taipei City at that time. Therefore, its form and size are the most magnificent among several city gates. The stone used was from the Dazhi area, and the construction is delicate and has withstood the test of time. The four sides of the stone lintel are decorated with dragon designs, which are different from other city gates. In the early days of Japanese rule, the Japanese destroyed the city walls, moats, and west gate of Taipei City. Although the South Gate was fortunate to be preserved, it was gradually damaged due to years of disrepair. After the National Government came to Taiwan, the government renovated the old city gate, and the South Gate was rebuilt into a Chinese northern-style palace city gate building, which lost its original appearance. However, the stone-built city seat and round archway were fortunate to remain intact. The South Gate is located at the intersection of Gongyuan Road, Nanchang Street, and Aiguo West Road. Next to it is the Grade 1 historic site, the Tobacco and Liquor Bureau building, and the heavily guarded Presidential Palace. The presence of plainclothes police and uniformed officers with a checkpoint every three to five steps makes passersby inevitably want to hurry through, which is a pity. Next time you pass by, you might as well stop and take a good look at this Taipei gate that once shouldered the heavy responsibility of guarding the city.
